The term succession indicates the action of sub-assigning, coming after or entering someone else’s place, naturally referring to you heir, which you can accept whether or not to exercise this right.
Since in general the heirs are of Italian citizens who moved abroad, in the succession the civil aspects are governed by European law (ln ° 650/12) or by the foreign country where the deceased lived (unless provided otherwise), while the tax aspects are governed by Italian law (ln. 218/95 only in Italian).
There is no need to acquire Italian citizenship to be able to claim the inheritance or forward the succession files.
